In 1644, Charles Gautier married a winegrower's daughter Jacquette Brochet. Charles' grandson, Louis, succeeded in obtaining a Royal Warrant in 1755, for the production of cognac. The Charter was signed by Louis XV when Louis Gautier founded the company which has continued to this day. In 1800, Gautier was one of the 4 negotiants established in Aigre; in Cognac there were six.

In 1975, Gautier has merged with Berger, and in 1995, Gautier became part of Marie Brizard and Roger International.
